Kind words cost nothing

Like many people, we’ve been thinking about what we can do to help right now. With no secret stash of PPE and zero experience of building ventilators, we’ve looped back around to what we know best: words.

Recent weeks have shown that words matter. When is a lockdown not a lockdown? Does sunbathing count as exercise? Are sports shop staff really frontline workers? However challenging it might be, getting your point across clearly is critical.

The right words, where they’re needed

For many small businesses, communicating well with customers could be the key to survival. The backbone of the UK, SMEs account for 99.9% of all businesses and make up three fifths of the nation’s employment. Without them, we’d all be much worse off. The community needs a support network to get through this.

That’s why we’re donating up to two hours of our time to help fellow SMEs find the right words. We can help you to:

  • Write a promo email that really works
  • Proofread that new web page
  • Write a letter to customers who can’t get online
  • Craft social media posts that are sensitive to the new normal

There’s no catch. It’s a small act of support in the face of this considerable threat. All we ask is that you spread the word on Twitter or LinkedIn using #countermeasure to encourage others to donate their expertise. And if you can, pay it forward by helping someone else.

We get that it’s relatively easy for us writers to donate our time. But we can all share knowledge. It doesn’t take more than a quick phone call. Maybe you’ve recently hired your first employee, started shipping abroad, or handled some tricksy commercial property paperwork – it’s all experience that you can share with someone who’s just getting there. Let’s all pull together, share what we know and do something good for each other.
